It’s one of the all-time great science fiction film scores, but did you know that the making of Alien (1979) was defined by a composer-director disagreement?
Temperamental Hollywood auteur Ridley Scott, also known for Blade Runner and Gladiator, wanted music that told audiences about the desolation of space. Composer Jerry Goldsmith, on the other hand, saw something beautiful in its vastness. Reluctantly, Goldsmith rewrote his music as "the obvious thing: weird and strange, and which everybody loved."
But Jerry Goldsmith being Jerry Goldsmith, there’s still a bit of beauty left, which you can hear in this episode of Screen Sounds. Also on the show is music for a moving Pixar animation, a TV sci-fi classic, and Paul Verhoeven’s most mysterious film.
