Weekend picks in classical music, theater and more in the Twin Cities and beyond

A wave of smart, talented, fascinating women arrives on stages in the Twin Cities this weekend.

Nora, the hero of Ibsen's play A Doll's House, slams the door behind her to seek her newly empowered future. Years later, who's knocking at that same door? Nora, returning for Lucas Hnath's modern sequel A Doll's House Part 2, on stage at Jungle Theater. Turns out that walking away is always more complicated than you think. More interesting too. That's why this powerful play will give you a lot to think about and argue over, long after the final curtain. Fabulous cast too; Nora is Christina Baldwin, working again with Stephen Epp (who was astonishingly terrifying and hilarious last fall in Ten Thousand Thing's A Winter's Tale).

Empowered women fill the stage at Theater Latté Da, opening the musical Bernarda Alba, based on Lorca's all-women play about a controlling mother and her five daughters. The cast list is a who's-who of Twin Cities acting talent; that alone promises an amazing evening.

At Minnesota Orchestra this weekend, two women are special guests. Conductor Simone Young, lately of Sydney and Hamburg operas, was the first woman to conduct at the Vienna State Opera (in 1993!). Joining her on stage, fresh from last week's gig at the Vienna State Opera (Rosina in Barber of Seville) is Irish mezzo Tara Erraught singing Mahler songs. Hear Classical MPR's live broadcast Friday night at 8.
