Roberto Cavagnoli

Roberto Cavagnoli was born July 8, 1975 in Manerbio, Italy.
He graduated in 1993 from the “Antonio Stradivari International School of Violin Making” in Cremona under the guidance of M° Giorgio Scolari, already displaying great natural skill for carving wood.
After the school he spent many years training in the workshop of Angelo Sperzaga, where he improved in manual dexterity and style, with particular attention to brush varnishing, working on classical Cremonese models.
Then, between 1998 and 2000, he worked in the workshop of M° Barbara Piccinotti where he made instruments taking care to achieve clean lines, partook in researching sound improvement, and developed a personal style.
In 2001 he received an offer to work overseas.
This took him to Australia where he refined his skills in the area of instrument set up , and deepened his research into sound improvement.
In 2004 he won a Silver Medal for cello tone at the V.S.A. Competition in Portland (Oregon) U.S.A.
In 2006 he won the third prize with a cello at the 11th International “Triennale” competition in Cremona for his personal style and for the excellent quality of sound.
In October 2004 he participated in a masterclass in “string instruments set up”, with M° Christian Bayon.
In 2007 he participated in the “City of Pisogne 1st National Violin Making Competition”, where he received 2nd prize in the cello section.
In 2008 he participated in the “City of Pisogne 2nd National Violin Making Competition”, receiving a “Special Mention for Acoustics” for his violin.
In 2008 he participated in a masterclass in instrument set up, with Master Igor Moroder.
In the same Year he participated in a masterclass in “The tracking of stringed instruments", with M° Francois Denis.
In 2009 he participated in a masterclass “Vacuum Bagging”, with M° Andrea Ortona. In 2012 he participated in a masterclass "Cooking Paints Grasse", with Maestro Francois Perego.
In 2015 he was commissioned by the Australian foundation "Ukaria" to copy the Cello "Ngeringa" made by J.B.Guadagnini in Piacenza 1743.
Simultaneously with the construction of this copy Roberto takes part in the making of a documentary film called “Highly Strung” made by international well know director Scott Hicks, inspired by a love of culture, violin making and music.
Today Roberto works in his own workshop in the centre of Cremona, via F. Aporti 21, and he makes violins, violas and cellos, following the antique Cremonese tradition.
