The Giuseppe Sinopoli Academy continues a long tradition of training within the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden: As early as 1923, the Orchestral School OSK was founded as a registered association to train young musicians specifically for the Kapelle. The artistic direction was in the hands of General Music Director Fritz Busch, later Karl Böhm.
In the following ten years, the number of students rose from an initial 50 to 200, and the Orchestral School had its own collection of instruments and its own library.
In 1937, the OSK was forced to submit to the administration of the city of Dresden and merge with the Krantz Conservatory to form the Conservatory of the City of Dresden, which in turn developed after the end of the Second World War via the State Academy for Music and Theater to the present-day Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden.
In 2008, the Orchestral School was re-established as an academy and finally renamed the Giuseppe Sinopoli Academy in 2011.
The orchestra's commitment to promoting young talent is clearly visible: former academists of the Giuseppe Sinopoli Academy play on numerous stands of the Staatskapelle as well as in other important European orchestras, and continue the very special Dresden orchestral and musical tradition.

The training content of the Giuseppe Sinopoli Academy includes:

  • Two-year practical training with 5 to 15 services per month

  • Integration into the regular performance schedule of the Semperoper Dresden, both in concert form in symphony and special concerts, as well as in the opera and ballet repertoire

  • Learning the special orchestral sound and the special playing style of the Sächsische Staatskapelle

  • Participation in two chamber music concerts as part of the academy concerts
