For her service to the performing arts, especially opera, Lindy Hume has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Currently the Artistic Director of Ten Days on the Island, Hume has directed numerous Australian festivals and opera companies over three decades, including Opera Queensland, Perth International Arts Festival and Sydney Festival, and is renowned for her innovative approaches to putting on new productions.

David Helfgott has been awarded the Order of Australia medal for his service to the music community as a concert pianist.

Helfgott’s story of extraordinary musical talent and struggle with mental illness was made famous by the Academy-award winning Shine (1996). In the years since the film’s release, he has enjoyed a busy Australian and international performance career, drawing audiences with his warmth and sincerity of expression.

The Order of Australia recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement. Anyone can nominate any Australian for an award in the Order of Australia.

Many other members of the Australia’s music community were recognised for their services to the performing arts. You can find a full list of recipients on the Governor General’s website.
