22-Year-Old Cellist Appointed Assistant Principal Cello of the Wiener Symphoniker

Bence Temesvári, who was born in 1999 in Budapest, has been named as the new Assistant Principal Cellist of the Wiener Symphoniker.

He has been living and studying in Vienna since 2015, and was a student of Robert Nagy, Peter Somodari, and István Várdai at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Temesvári has had numerous competition successes despite his young age. He was the winner of the 2017 David Popper competition, the second prize at the Talents for Europe competition in Slovakia, and took the Grand Prix there when he returned in 2019. The same year he also won first prize at the Mahler Competition, held in the Czech Republic.

He has also won a number of high-profile scholarships, including for the Wiener Philharmoniker chamber music course as part of the International Music Forum in Trenta, Slovenia in 2015, the summer camp of the Interlochen Center for the Arts in the USA in 2016 and 2017, the European Union Youth Orchestra (2019-2021), and the Pacific Music Festival (Japan 2018, 2020, 2021).

"We warmly congratulate you," wrote the Wiener Symphoniker on social media following the result of Temesvári's audition. "We look forward to making music together!"
