West Edge Opera is set to present “Jacqueline” as part of its festival this August.

The opera, which explores the story of famed cellist Jacqueline Du Pré, will feature cellist Matt Haimovitz and soprano Marnie Breckenridge. Both artists headlined the opera’s premiere at Tapestry Opera in Toronto in 2020 with Breckenridge winning the DORA award for “Outstanding Performances by an Individual in an Opera.”

“I was at the premiere of the ‘Jacqueline’ in Toronto in 2020 and was blown away by the epic nature of the piece especially considering there are only two performers on stage,” said West Edge Opera General Director Mark Streshinsky in an official press statement. “Presenting ‘Jacqueline’ fulfills our careful planning for sustainability. Next year David & Jonathan will be presented alongside the world premiere of ‘Dolores’ and an early 20^th century piece that we will be announcing soon. It also means that West Edge will be around and strong as a leader in new and rare opera for many years to come.”

The work draws inspiration from Elgar’s Cello Concerto, Du Pré’s signature interpreation. The opera was created by Luna Pearl Woolf and Royce Vavrek.

The festival opens on August 3rd and runs through the 18th. Also on the program, is the world premiere of “Bulrusher” and “Legend of the Ring,” which packs together highlights of Wagner’s famed tetralogy “Der Ring des Nibelungen.”
