Opéra Orchestre National de Montpellier Occitanie Announces New Music Director

By Francisco Salazar

Roderick Cox has been named Music Director of the Opéra Orchestre National de Montpellier Occitanie.

He will begin his tenure during the 2024-5 season and will become the youngest permanent conductor at the head of the Montpellier Orchestra since its creation.

Cox is a winner of the 2018 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Prize and in 2019 he launched a program aimed at supporting young American musicians from diverse backgrounds.

In a statement, the conductor said, “I am deeply honored to have been appointed Musical Director of the Montpellier National Opera Orchestra. My work with the orchestra musicians over the past few productions has been artistically enriching and fulfilling. I am motivated and inspired to deepen our relationship in the years to come and share our work with audiences in Montpellier and beyond. I am determined to perpetuate the legacy of artistic excellence that characterizes this orchestra while using the transformative power of music to chart bold new paths, diversifying our programs and developing new audiences alongside already loyal spectators. I can’t wait to start working closely with the musicians and management team.”
