The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra Academy is a special academic programme for young musicians.
Since 2016, an orchestra academy has been associated with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. This advanced special academic programme is for young musicians. Teaching is conducted on-site at Konserthuset Stockholm and in partnership with the School of Music in Piteå at Luleå University of Technology.
The programme is focused on an international target audience and the formal name is the RSPO Orchestra Academy (Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra – RSPO).
The supervisors and instructors are primarily section leaders from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The programme includes individual instrument instruction, orchestral performance, and chamber music performance.
There are also “mock auditions” in which participants get to practice the various steps involved with applying for a position in an orchestra, as well as seminars by experienced teachers from the School of Music at Luleå University of Technology. The programme examiner is conductor Petter Sundkvist, professor at the Luleå University of Technology.
A holistic approach is essential – to give students the chance to experience what life and work are like as part of a professional symphony orchestra. The Orchestra Academy also performs several chamber music concerts in Grünewald Hall, which are always free. The Orchestra Academy has also performed the world premieres of new compositions.
Another aspect of a holistic approach is refining skills beyond playing – such as stage presence and the ability to present the music in an inviting and compelling way.
The orchestra academy also carries out collaborations with other players – read more under Collaborations and Partnerships.

An atmospheric concert during which the hall is darkened and the audience gets to experience the music up close on the illuminated stage (limited seating) or from the stalls.
An experience unlike any other: hearing the musicians’ breathing and watching them interact through the slightest looks and gestures. True “chamber” music, as it were! The performers all study at the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s international orchestral academy, a special higher education programme for gifted young musicians.
This evening, they are performing a wind quintet by Paul Taffanel (1844–1908), an influential flautist himself who also served as a conductor. The elegant and charmingly melodic quintet actually allowed Taffanel to win a composition contest in the 1870s.
The RSPO Orchestra Academy (the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s international orchestral academy) is an advanced academic training programme for young musicians. Led by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s section leaders and in partnership with the Piteå School of Music, students undergo rigorous training, focusing on their individual instrument of choice, orchestral music and chamber music. They also participate in a number of chamber music concerts that are open to the public.

This evening, they perform the first movement of Schubert’s lovely string quintet in C major – one of the finest pieces of chamber music ever written, and one of the last completed by Schubert in his lifetime.

The RSPO Orchestra Academy aims to give participating musicians heightened knowledge and understanding of the profession. The young musicians receive individual tuition on their instrument by tutors that are predominantly leaders and principals of the orchestra. In addition, extensive chamber music playing is a vital part of the course. In this grand final concert, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's chief conductor Ryan Bancroft leads the ensemble in two of the pieces, making it an extra special occasion!
Caroline Shaw is an American violinist, singer, and composer. Her Entr'acte for string quartet was inspired by Haydn's String Quartet Opus 77 No. 2. (A version for string orchestra of the same work can be heard with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra on the 17th and 18th of April.)
John Adams is undoubtedly the leading American composer of today. He was the subject of Konserthuset’s International Composer Festival in 2005. Adams also looked back into music history in this piece, which is inspired by Arnold Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony – and also by the kind of hyperactive and acrobatic music one can hear in cartoons of the 1950s.
Among the 20th-century American composers, Aaron Copland is the grand old man. His Appalachian Spring is ballet music, composed in the 1940s during his most productive years. The ballet depicts a pioneer environment in the mountains, and the music draws from Native American folk tunes, dance melodies, and hymns.
