Relax With a Musical Happy Hour

Published on Jul 26, 2021

Salastina Music Society presents violinist Bruce Dukov Tuesday, July 27, as he performs on the Milstein Stradivarius, the Golden-Period violin made by Antonio Stradivari in 1716 in Cremona, Italy, and now owned by local philanthropists Jerry and Terri Kohl.

The performance is Salatina’s Happy Hour No. 66, and begins at 6 p.m.

The Milstein Stradivarius is one of the maker’s finest and is used by the finest players around the world. Henry Goldman, a scion of the family that founded the Goldman Sachs investment banking firm, owned the 1716 Strad from 1911 to 1923. The instrument changed hands three times before Ukranian-American virtuoso Nathan Mironovich Millstein acquired it in 1945.

After Milstein’s death, the family retained ownership until 2006 before selling it to the Kohls, Pasadena residents who have been consistent donors to Pasadena Symphony and Pops and MUSE/IQUE, and have supported other musical organizations, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Colburn School, and Los Angeles Master Chorale.

Aside from being philanthropists, the Kohls, both music lovers, have been lending the instrument to players of distinction.

Bruce Dukov, a Milstein protege, hasn’t laid hands on the instrument in decades. At this unique event on Tuesday, he’ll be playing the Milstein Strad and share first-hand, intimate stories from its time in the hands of the legendary owner.
