Nils Mönkemeyer has made a name for himself as one of the most internationally successful violists and has helped the viola to attract enormous attention.
Mönkemeyer's programmes range from discoveries and first recordings of original viola literature from the 18th century to modern music and his own arrangements. Nils Mönkemeyer works with conductors such as Andrej Boreyko, Sylvain Cambreling, Constantinos Carydis, Nicholas Collon, Reinhard Goebel, Elias Grandy and others.
He performs as a soloist worldwide with outstanding orchestras such as the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Musiciens du Louvre, ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.
In the 2023/24 season, he will be a guest soloist with the Hamburg State Orchestra under the direction of Kent Nagano, where he will premiere Vladimir Tarnopolski's "Im Dunkel vor der Dämmerung" together with Andreas Ottensamer and Edicson Ruiz, as well as with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Orchestra della Svizzera italiana, NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic, the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the Jena Philharmonic and the Basel Chamber Orchestra. Mönkemeyer has been a professor at the Munich University of Music and Theatre since 2011.
His most recent album "Dance for Two" with recorder player Dorothee Oberlinger, which brings together works from over a thousand years of music history, mostly in his own arrangements for this special instrumentation, was released in spring 2023.
