Gwyneth Wilbur

Gwyneth Wilbur is a New Brunswick-born luthier who has established a unique business in her Canadian home province, making and servicing stringed instruments for both professional and amateur musicians across North America.

She began playing the violin and cello as a youngster but it was her artful talent as a crafts person that was noticed and encouraged, notably by a Czechoslovakian luthier in Montreal who guided her towards her chosen career.

She began training at Concordia University, Montreal, studying the construction of baroque instruments. There she made a Viol da Gamba, the fore-runner of the modern violin. At age seventeen, she was accepted at the prestigious Peter Prier Violin Making School of America, Salt Lake City, Utah. She continued her studies at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in Fredericton, New Brunswick, specializing in fretted instrument making. After three years she completed her training by apprenticing with Italian-trained luthier, Pierre Charette, in Montreal.

To date, Gwyneth has produced many violins, guitars, mandolins and other stringed instruments and has repaired and restored many more. She operates a New Brunswick based violin making studio, conducts workshops and lectures, and still finds time for local art, music and drama clubs.
