Cottbus, the "city on the move" in the Berlin metropolitan region, is transforming itself from a lignite mining centre to an innovative location with a high quality of life. The Philharmonic Orchestra of the Cottbus State Theatre has been in existence since 1912 and has 74 members. The main venue is the beautiful Art Nouveau theatre on Schillerplatz, which was inaugurated in 1908. The Philharmonic Orchestra's remit includes concerts, ballet and opera performances and chamber music.
