Robert Young

Traditionally trained by renowned French luthier Brice Dupin de St-Cyr in New York’s Carnegie Hall, Robert Brewer Young was fortunate to receive an exceptionally demanding and enrichening education in violinmaking. He had regular access, during his apprentice years, to Jacques Francais’ unparalleled collection of rare instruments. Other masterpieces were frequently brought into Dupin de St-Cyr’s shop by some of the world’s leading musicians, such as M.Rostropovitch. By studying directly from the source and engaging with some of the world’s most accomplished and demanding players, Mr. Young acquired a rare expertise of old masters and their differentiating characteristics as experienced by players. He forged his international reputation as a craftsman over nearly 20 years of full-time, professional activity and belongs today among the world’s most knowledgeable and noted luthiers. His ability to listen to his material’s native potential and to what a contemporary musician needs, contributes decisively to the quality of his exquisite instruments. And his ongoing, working discourse with the greatest stringed instruments in history has the potential to be uniquely rewarding for the Guadagnini Quartet. Mr. Young is a member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers and the Association de Luthiers et Archetiers pour le Developpement de la Facture Instrumentale (ALADFI, France).

Robert also holds a BFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and a Master’s in Philosophy from the New School in New York. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Philosophy with a thesis on the influence of Indian Philosophy on Mathematics and Logic. Mr. Young lives in France and travels to the USA several times per year.
