Stephane Bodart was born in 1974, St Martin d'Hères, France.
He grew up in a family of artists : his mother a painter, his grandfather a sculptor and his uncle Philippe Bodart a violin maker.
He decides to follow his uncle's steps and for several years he spends his summer holidays visiting his workshop, where he can see the richness of his art.At 18, he leaves Paris ( France) for Cremona (Italy) and continues his training at the VIOLIN MAKING SCHOOL ANTONIO STRADIVARI (IPIALL).During four years, he learns the different building technics of the famous 16th and 17th centuries’s violin makers.He graduates from l'Istituto professionale internazionale per l'artigianato liutario e del legno Antonio Stradivari" in 1995 - Cremona, Italy.
Back in Paris, he opens his own workshop where he dedicates his time to making instruments (violin, viola, cello).He takes inspiration from beautiful models such as those of Antonio Stradivari, Guarnieri and the Amati bothers.He also gets inspiration, especially for making cellos, from the great makers of Venezia, Domenico Montagnana, Matteo Gofriller and Pietro Guarnieri.
For musicians interested in his work, he always tries to offer a variety of models and materials in the name of research, for example, the violin maker has great freedom of expression in constructing the arching form of the instrument in order to provide the best equilibrium for each musician.
The quality of the wood is of the upmost importance (density, tension, elasticity).He likes to work with the French spruce from Haut-Jura and maple from France and Eastern Europe (Balkans,Romania) both of which provide him a good stock to work with.All these parameters will have a determining influence on the sound's emission and the tone quality.
The experiences acquired during these 18 years, full of observations, working relationships with musicians and violin makers and a strong intuition which is a motivating element in researching sounds, gives him the possibility to propose modern instruments of quality.

Il a grandit dans une famille d'artistes, sa mère peintre, son grand père sculpteur et son oncle Philippe Bodart luthier.
Il décide de s'orienter vers la lutherie en fréquentant pendant plusieurs années l'atelier de son oncle, où il se découvre une vraie passion pour cet art.A 18 ans, il quitte Paris (France) pour rejoindre l'IPIALL* Istituto Professional Internationale per l'Artigianato Liutario e del Legno Antonio Stradivari.
Pendant 4 ans, il continue son apprentissage en se confrontant aux différents techniques de fabrication.Cette expérience dans le berceau de la lutherie lui sera très enrichissante.
En 1995 il obtient le diplôme de l'Ecole de lutherie de Crémone, Italie.De retour à Paris, il ouvre son propre atelier et se consacre entièrement à la fabrication des instruments du quatuor.Il s'inspire des modèles des Grands Maîtres Italiens Crémonais et Vénitiens comme Antonio Stradivari, frères Amati, Guarnieri, Domenico Montagnana, en particulier pour les violoncelles.
Il tente de proposer aux musiciens intéressés par son travail, différents modèles et fabrique toujours, dans un soucis de recherche, par exemple sur l’influence des voûtes, là ou le luthier a une grande liberté d’expression afin de trouver le meilleur équilibre pour chacun d’entre eux.
La qualité du bois a un impact majeur sur le travail du luthier (densité, nervosité, élasticité), il aime travailler avec l’épicéa français originaire du Haut-Jura et l’érable venant de France et de l’Europe de l’est (Balkans, Roumanie, Bosnie) fourni par « le bois de lutherie Bernard Michaud ».
Tous ces paramètres auront une influence déterminante sur l’émission et le timbre de l’instrument.
L’expérience acquise durant ces 18 ans, nourrie d’observations, relations avec les musiciens, luthiers et une forte intuition qui est un élément moteur dans la recherche du son, lui donne la possibilité de proposer des instruments modernes de qualité.
